What we love most about the holiday season are the decorations! It makes our world look so festive. However, before the festivities can begin, we need to tidy and declutter our home to make way for these fabulous decor items.
Here are a few tips for decluttering your home to ready it for holiday decorations.
Start now
Every year people debate when to start putting up their decorations. No matter when you plan to decorate your home for the holidays, you can start now by decluttering your home. This will make room for your decorations.
It’s also a great time to finally drop off that donation bin at your local thrift store or community society. If you have any old warm coats, now is the perfect time to donate them to a shelter for those who need them.
Declutter one room at a time
Don’t feel you need to clean and declutter your entire home today so you can decorate tomorrow. Declutter one room at a time to make it less overwhelming. Maybe you do the living room today so you can put up the tree (that’s always our favourite Christmas decor to put up first). Then tomorrow, you clean your front hall and entryway so you can decorate your front foyer and door.
Declutter the “invisible” spaces
This time of year is also perfect for decluttering the spaces guests rarely see, like your closet. If you haven’t already, swap your summer and winter wardrobes. Don’t forget your front closet too. Pack away your summer outerwear and shoes in favour of winter boots and warm jackets. While you’re at it, grab an organizing basket to store all your small winter accessories like gloves, scarves, and toques, so they have a neat and tidy home near your front door.
Move furniture
Sometimes you need to move furniture to make room for your tree or larger decorations. Get some floor pads, so you don’t scratch the furniture feet on your floors.
Deep clean
While you’re decluttering, give your home a good dust and vacuum. You likely only move your couch during the holidays, so potentially a year’s worth of dust bunnies are awaiting you under the sofa. Use this opportunity to vacuum and clean these usually hidden areas now and once again before you pack up your decorations in January.
Throw away broken decor
If your holiday decor didn’t survive last season, maybe a few baubles broke while in storage, now is the time to get them fixed or throw them away. If you have other decor, you no longer want or need, consider donating it or dropping it off at a thrift store. Then, treat yourself to a new ornament or holiday decor item if you wish.
We love the festive colours and spirit in the air over the holiday season. It brings me such joy, and we hope to bring joy to your family by helping you declutter your home and decorate for the season.
